DNA of eukaryotes is packaged into chromatin, a complex of DNA and proteins. The basic repeating unit is the nucleosome, consisting of 147 bp DNA complexing an octamer of histones. Post-transcriptional modification (PTM) of histones can, in part, regulate transcriptional activity. The PTMs of histones are referred to as the histone code. My research is focussed on the glycosylation of histones and the interplay with other PTMs. To study glycosylation of histones, one avenue of my research focuses on the selective introduction of naturally occurring glycosylation patterns via a chemical-biological approaches.
